it’s a fungus and needs Rx medication for treatment. bleach won’t help, might irritate the skin, though.

1.Recognize the infection. Look for:

?A ring with irregular borders and a cleared central area.
?Itching.
?Redness of the skin.
?Flaky skin.
?Cracking of the skin.
?An area of hair loss may result if the scalp is involved.
?More aggressive infections may lead to an abscess (collection of pus).

2.Understand that symptoms appear 4-14 days after exposure to the dermatophyte.

3.Know that infections can be treated successfully with prescribed medication from your health care provider. Scalp infections generally require an oral anti fungal medication treatment. Infection of other areas of skin are treated with a topical anti fungal medication. Nail infections can be more difficult to treat, and may be treated with oral and/or topical anti fungal medication.

•Parts of the body infected by a dermatophyte may cause a secondary infection due to bacteria.
•Wrestlers are at a high risk of contracting ringworm.
•For reasons yet unknown, a dermatophyte infection that affects the scalp and hair does not occur after puberty.
•Dermatophyte infections can affect the skin on almost any part of the body. Including the scalp, legs, arms, feet, groin and nails.
•Clothing, bedding and towels can become contaminated and quickly spread the infection.
•Make sure your pets are evaluated by a veterinarian. Ringworm is easily transmitted from your pets to household members.

Just go to the drug section of any store and get some ointment for athlete’s foot. It will clear it right up, but ringworm takes a while to go away, so it won’t be instant. In fact, even when you CAN’T see it anymore, keep applying the ointment for a few more weeks. It can look like it’s gone, but still be there.

You don’t normally need prescription medication unless you have something very severe or unusual going on. I work with animals, and I’ve unfortunately contracted ringworm several times.

Hi there,
I am nervous I might get it myself since I adopted a new kitten and he has it. The vet gave me an anti fungal cream for him and I got one for myself, just in case. You can get the anti fungal creams at Wal Greens or Rite Aid..in the athletes foot section. Tinacton is one of them. sp?. Look at all the creams and see if they say “ringworm.” or Tinea corporis. It should clear up in a few days with the creams. Sadly, now you have to wash everything in bleach and vacuum to avoid re infecting yourself. Good luck!
